Mobility Scooter Battery Types Compared: Lead-Acid vs Lithium

By RUIDI Vehicle · Published October 29, 2026 · 5 min read

The battery is the heart of any mobility scooter. The choice between sealed lead-acid (SLA) and lithium-ion changes weight, range, lifespan and price.

Weight and handling

Lithium packs are typically 50-60% lighter than equivalent SLA. For portable models that users lift daily, that difference is decisive.

Lifespan

SLA lasts ~300-500 cycles; quality lithium lasts 800-1200 cycles. Over a 3-year ownership, lithium is usually cheaper per cycle.

Range and charge

Lithium holds voltage flatter, so usable range stays consistent until empty, and it charges faster. See our lithium maintenance guide.

Safety and certification

Both must meet UN38.3 and transport rules. Our lithium packs add over-temperature and over-current protection and ship with CE/ISO documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I replace SLA with lithium later?

Only with a compatible charger and BMS; we recommend specifying lithium from the factory for safety.

Q: Are lithium batteries allowed on flights?

Air transport follows IATA rules; most mobility packs are shipped by ground or with operator approval.
